Trevor Brooking came through the famed West Ham youth system that gave the club the well deserved nickname of The Academy. His career spanned 17 years with a total of 634 appearances which included two FA Cup victories plus a European Cup Winners Cup final (versus Anderlecht) and a League Cup final (versus Liverpool).
During an era when pitches could be little more than a mud bath Trevor Brooking stood out as a majestic midfielder whose skill was breathtaking with either foot and his vision and ability have rarely been matched. After relegation in 1978 Trevor Brooking proved his loyalty to West Ham by telling then manager John Lyall that he would understand if he was sold to finance a rebuilding of the squad but that if at all possible he would prefer to stay with the club.
Voted Hammer of the Year by the fans on a record 5 occasions (1972, 1976, 1977, 1978 and 1984)
After his playing career ended he became a board member at West Ham, even taking temporary charge of the first team on two occasions, firstly when Glen Roeder was ill and secondly after Roeder had been sacked. Despite fans wanting him to take the managers job permanently he resisted the temptation as he did not want to put his family through the rigors associated with becoming a Premier League manager. Trevor is now Director of Football at the FA.
Sir Trevor Brooking was awarded an MBE in 1981 and was knighted in 2004 for his services to football.
